For Maverick Mixtapes, we asked musicians from different musical backgrounds to curate an hour of music that they deemed best fit the ideal of an "American Maverick." Today's featured musician is composer, songwriter, author and multimedia artist David Byrne.

"It was a little hard to confine this list solely to Americans, as music innovation is pretty global as a phenomenon. What's really cool about what all of these people are doing is that they all seem to defy categories. They seem to have made up their own genres, ways of working and approaches. I'll also say that they are all, depending on your openness, fairly accessible. Their work draws you in, invites you to enjoy it, doesn't push you away with theories and dogmas and they all seduce in new and strange ways." —David Byrne
